Play at Gallagher Way!

Welcome to my first real blog post! If you’re just now stopping by, I started Hopscotch City about a week ago and I’m very excited about this new endeavor. Hopscotch City aims to be your guide to all of the latest and greatest, cheap/free children’s events in Chicago. My goal is to help take the stress out of finding the events you want to go to and have everything in one place and in one calendar. If you haven’t taken a look at the calendar yet, go check it out! I love that I can see everything that’s happening throughout the week and can find something quickly on any given day if we feel the urge to get out of the house. I hope you enjoy it and find it useful!

We spent the morning at Gallagher Way today to check out the free Wiggleworms event. Wiggleworms is a free children’s concert hosted by Old Town School of Folk. It seemed like all of Chicago already knew about this event – it was packed! We managed to find a good spot next to the stage even though we arrived a little bit late. Old Town School of Folk played some familiar tunes so the kids could easily sing and dance along.

After the music was over, all of the children scrambled over to the fountain area. They waited with much anticipation, asking their parents when the water would be turned on. Once the fountains started up, an echo of joyous screams could be heard all around.

It typically takes my daughter, Eisley, a little bit to warm up to group situations, so we decided to go grab a scoop of ice cream at Jeni’s a few steps away and wait for the crowd to die down. We shared a scoop of Brambleberry and we were not disappointed. It tasted like blackberry pie in ice cream form! I’m sure we will be back for more.

Once Eisley was fueled with sugar, we went back to the fountain area and she was ready to splash around. I wore an all black jumpsuit today which was definitely a mistake as there are not many shaded areas near the fountains.

There is also the option to set up a blanket or chairs on the lawn and watch an outdoor movie. Today they played the movie, Smallfoot. It was nice to have a variety of entertainment options available to suit your child’s ever-changing mood.

All-in-all we had a great, cheap morning at Gallagher Way! See my “pro tips” below for making the most out of this event.

Pro Tips:

  1. Get there early to find a good spot and free parking on the side streets!
  2. Go get a coffee or a scoop of ice cream from Jeni’s after the music is over and wait for the crowd to clear out.
  3. Bring a blanket (or tent!) and set up on the lawn to catch the outdoor movie afterwards.
  4. Have your kids wear their bathing suits so they can splash in the fountains after the performance.
  5. Pack a lunch – your kid probably won’t want to leave.
  6. Wear or bring a hat!

The Wiggleworms program is held every Tuesday morning from 10am – 12:30pm at Gallagher Way next to Wrigley Field. Click the button below for more information.
